The sun-drenched island of Santorini, Greece, proudly nicknamed the "Greek gem", is quite iconic. You will find some of the most picturesque views including white-washed buildings, breathtaking sunsets, villages perched atop dramatic cliffs,  and more surrounded by sapphire waters. You can journey down cliffside staircases to find Santorini's many beaches waiting for you at the bottom; you'll find black, red, and white sand beaches due to its volcanic past. It's no wonder Santorini is known as the "postcard island of Greece"!

Seeking culture and artistry? Try exploring the village of Mesa Gonia. Surrounded by vast vineyards and Byzantine churches, the village offers an "Art Space", displaying interesting art collections of both Greek and foreign artists. Mesa Gonia used to be one of the most important wine tasting places on the island; unfortunately, a devastating 1956 earthquake entirely destroyed the village and drove its inhabitants to the nearby village of Kamari. What you will find now is a much more unassuming atmosphere.

The traditional village of Pyrgos, once Santorini's capital, is the highest village on the island. You'll find great panoramic views, narrow winding paths, piano lessons heard through open windows, blue-domed churches, and villagers enjoying a relaxed pace of life. Pyrgos is very reminiscent of picturesque villages of yesteryear, seeing as it has been spared the glossy infinity pools, terraces, balconies, and master suites championed by tourist magazines. Instead, the village retains a more natural beauty and charm.

In visiting the village of Megalochori, you will find a similarly alluring old-fashioned atmosphere. Megalochori allows you a glimpse into what Santorini used to be like, as well as witnessing the production of its delectable wine; the wine here is known for its unique characteristics and tastes, a byproduct of the island's dry climate. The island is home to wealthy vineyards, traditional houses, old mansions, and is perched right above some of the most extraordinary beaches!

Santorini Greece Fun Fact: Pyrgos and Megalochori were pirate hideaways long ago!

The settlement of Akrotiri is an intriguing hidden gem. Originally a city (of which the name isn't known), the settlement was buried in a massive volcanic eruption. Home to the ancient Minoans, Akrotiri started life as a traditional fishing and farming village. Conveniently placed right between the trade route between Europe and the Middle East, it became quite prosperous. What's most impressive is that, existing during the Bronze Age, the Minoans sculpted, crafted pots, and made their own wine. Some say the city was Plato's inspiration for the city of Atlantis. Around 1500 BC, the volcano Thera brought a swift and sudden end this advanced civilization. These days, when visiting Akrotiri you'll encounter many beautiful frescoes and well-preserved Minoan artifacts.

One of the most popular destinationsin Santorini Greece, the village of Oia, allows visitors to see lavish houses made for Venetian sea captains or the humble "cave houses" inhabited by villagers. Oia is abounding with culture, home to several attractions such as the Maritime Museum (showcasing a library, remnants of a Venetian fortress, and items from maritime life in the area), art galleries, taverns with fresh fish meals, and the boat port Ammoudi. By accessing a set of 300 steps down, you will find the port which can take you to Therasia, another island in Santorini. At the bottom of the steps you'll also encounter the Armeni Beach, a quiet and relaxing destination with crystal clear water and a diving center. If you visit Oia, the sunset is absolutely legendary. Make sure to stay during the evening and enjoy it!

There are so many ways to visit Santorini. It's a hot stop for many cruise lines, or you can stay in one of its luxurious hotels and island-hop through some of Greece's beautiful islands! Once it becomes safe to travel again, I am confident a vacation to the "Greek gem" of Santorini Greece will be one of the best experiences of your life!
